Contrary to expectation in some quarters, public and Private Schools across Ogun state resumed for the 2014 and 2015 academic session.

 

At most of the schools visited by Galaxy News outside the state capital, there was low turnout of pupils while teachers were fully on ground for the commencement of the new academic session.

 

‎Public and private schools across the 20 Local Government areas of Ogun state today resumed for the 2014 and 2015 academic year as against insinuation in some quarters that some schools in the state will not resumed.

 

Galaxy News learnt that the state government had on Tuesday distributed the thermometer and other equipment meant to check the pupils for Ebola Virus Disease ahead of today resumption and as requested by the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools and the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

 

However, the resumption of pupils for the new academic calendar was marred by poor attendance of students. In most schools visited by our Correspondent, few pupils were ‎seen in the classes despite the presence of teachers who were eager to commence teaching immediately.

 

It was gathered that the poor attendance might be as a result of the long holiday of Eid-el-Kabir festival while others attributed the poor attendance to fear of Ebola Virus Disease.

 

Also, in most of the schools, designated teachers and nurses were seen checking the status of the pupils with the thermometer before entering into classes while there was no hand washing bowl in most of the schools as recommended by the experts.

 

Speaking with Journalists on the resumption, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in Ogun State, Barrister Segun Odubela confirmed that  ‎all public and Private Schools in the state have resumed for the new academic session.

 

He agreed to the fact that the attendance was poor in most of the schools but added that, some schools have commenced the new term test, which according to him would form part of the assessment for the term.

 

Barrister Odubela stated that the school calendar in the state had been adjusted saying normal close time would no be 3pm unlike the usual 2pm. 

 

He stressed further that‎ the first term examination in all government Schools has been slated for the first week of January 2015 noting that, all efforts have been made to ensure that the periods missed by the pupils were captured.
