Lawyers lament battering by Policemen

Legal practitioners and members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Warri branch have described the battering of a lawyer, Barrister Bernard Oyabevwe at the high court premises in Warri by policemen of the A Division, as an abuse of the legal profession.

The lawyers made this known while speaking with our Galaxy television correspondent, who captured the scene as three armed policemen escorted the lawyer with one of them seizing him on his shirt while blood rolled down his nose.

Speaking at the court premises as blood stains could be seen on the floor, some members of the Warri NBA condemned the act.

Meanwhile, as the battered lawyer was being led away to the hospital by his colleagues as a result of injuries sustained, a friend to the lawyer who was with him during the attack said the incident shows lawyers are not respected.

When contacted, the Delta police spokesperson, Andrew Aniamaka absolves the police of any wrongdoing saying the lawyer attacked first, while the commissioner of police, Muhammad Mustafa ordered the case to be charged to court.
