Gov Ahmed calls for total reformation of Nigeria prison
The kwara state governor, Abdulfath Ahmed has called for total reformation of the federal prisons across the country due to the congestion and inappropriate locations.
Ahmed made the call in Ilorin while members of the house of representatives committee on Army paid him a courtesy visit in his office at government house in Ilorin on the sidelines of an oversight visit to Oke kura federal prisons in Ilorin.
Abdulfatah Ahmed while welcoming the committee members said most of the prisons were built when Nigeria's population was 70million with the required capacity. He added that the country's population had increased which led to prison congestion and most of location have now fallen into the middle of the metropolis which has now called for relocation to the edge of the town.
He therefore, called on the federal government to declare emergency on Nigerian prisons in order to have a new look. The Chairman House committee on army and the interior Sunday katung said Nigerian prisons need urgent attention across the country
He noted that the atmosphere in the area was no longer conducive for both the prison inmates and members of the community. Chairman house committee on army and the interior now the Governor and chairman house committee on army and interior have suggested that Nigerian prisons should be given a new look but with so many contending priorities of government, time will tell if this will get the prompt attention it required.
