Senate proposes establishment of National Database

A  bill seeking to repeal the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2007 came under public hearing at the Senate.

 

The bill provides for the establishment of a National Identity Database, and the NIMC is charged with the responsibilities for the maintenance of the national database, the registration of individuals, and the issuance of identity credentials

 

GALAXYTV reports that the hearing was conducted by the Senate committee on National Identity and National Population chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi.

 

The bill is designed to align with the Data Protection Act and address limitations faced by the NIMC in administrative enforcement.

 

Speaking during the public hearing, Director General and CEO of NIMC, Coker-Odusote, emphasized the bill’s potential to enhance operational efficiency and support the government's Renew Hope agenda.

 

 

In his opening remarks, Senator Ningi Identity and National Population, underscored the importance of the bill.

The bill was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin.
