Reps Pass Bill against Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Institutions
The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed for third reading, "a bill for an act to prevent, prohibit and redress sexual harassment of students in tertiary institutions and for other related matters and for matters connected there with.
The bill which is a legacy bill was read on the floor at plenary by the House majority leader, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere who incidentally first brought the bill before the house in the 9th Assembly with the former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege presenting same bill at the Senate before Hon. Akin Rotimi reintroduced it in the 10th Assembly with some modifications.
According to Hon. Akin Rotimi, the bill's objective amongst other things are, to promote and protect ethical standards in tertiary institutions, the sanctity of students-educator fiduciary relationship of authority, dependency, trust and respect for human dignity.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and Civil Society groups also spoke on the importance of the bill which they are praying for that if finally assented to by the president, will protect students from predatory lecturers.
