Reps Frown At Poor Quality On Govt Projects In Akwa Ibom State
The House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning has expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of the Renewed Hope Estate Project in Uyo and the substandard construction of the Umu Etuk-Spencer Esin slum upgrade road in Oron, Akwa Ibom State.
Committee Chairman, Rep. Awaji-Inombek Abiante Dagomie, criticized the four contractors involved in the projects urging the engagement of more competent professionals to ensure proper execution.
During an oversight visit, he revealed that the 250 housing units in Uyo, funded up to 30% by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, were less than 6% completed, despite a September 2024 deadline.
Rep. Abiante also condemned the poor quality of the Oron road project, completed in July, and called for its total reconstruction.
The lawmaker also accused the contractors—Springwell Intercontinental Resources, Tunsoye Trust Global Link, Hyosungs Nigeria Limited, and Logine Limited—of sabotaging the federal government’s Renewed Hope housing initiative.
The Committee has summoned the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, and the four contractors to appear on Thursday to address the delays and challenges affecting the projects.
